Well, it’s here.
The beginning of a new school year…
And my attitude is just awful.
I hate the start of school. I always dread it for many reasons.
I like my kids at home with me.
I like not having a set bedtime.
I like not having homework.
I like not getting up early and scrambling to get everything done.
Most of all, I hate the busyness that goes along with school starting.
Also, it’s a reminder that my kids are getting older.
I mean a sophomore, 8th grader, and 3rd grader? It just can’t be!
I’ve sulked. I’ve complained. I’ve dreaded.
But it’s here.
And God seems to think I need an attitude adjustment.
I know this because as I read my Bible, and pray, I can hear His gentle whispers.
“Be thankful.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
“Be joyful.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16
“Do it all in My name.” Colossians 3:17
So today, as my kids head off to start a new year, I’m going to change my attitude.
I’m going to be thankful that my kids are healthy enough to go to school.
I’m going to be thankful that I can help the kids God gave me with their homework.
When I wake up, even if I’m tired, I will thank God that He let me wake up.
When I think about how fast the years are passing, I will look back with joy and gratitude at all the memories that we made.
And when we rush to church, practices, games, and events, I’m going to remember that whatever we do, and wherever we go, we can bring glory to Jesus.
It’s hard to be light with a bad attitude.
My back-to-school prayer is different this year. It’s as much for me, as it is for my kids.
I’ll always pray for God’s hand of protection, but I’m also praying for God to help us to always be joyful, thankful, and to remember that wherever we go, and whatever we do, we are to do it to bring glory to God.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
