As I was reading Jonah today, I wondered why Jonah told the sailors to throw him into the sea.
Instead, why didn’t Jonah just jump overboard?
If he knew the storm was because of him and he knew the sea would become calm, why didn’t he just jump?
Maybe it’s because Jonah was a lot like us.
It seems like Jonah still hadn’t learned to be obedient.
How many times do we know we should do something but choose not to?
Or we want to do it our own way in our own time?
We know Jonah disobeyed God when he was supposed to go to Nineveh and didn’t.
Then, the storm came and he knew it was because of his disobedience.
He also told the sailors he knew the sea would become calm if they threw him in.
But the sailors didn’t want to throw him in.
So why didn’t Jonah jump in?
It seems like once again he knew what he needed to do but just didn’t want to…
I’d never thought much about Jonah telling them to throw him in, and how maybe this was another example of him still not surrendering to the will of God.
Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. James 4:17
Lesson from today: Don’t wait to be thrown in…JUMP!
It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. 2 Peter 2:21
