How To Handle Anger

1Has someone lied to you?  Has someone mistreated you?  Has someone betrayed you?  Has someone treated you unfairly?

When others hurt us or someone we love, we get angry.  Anger is a normal emotion.  You may even have a good reason to be angry.  At times, even Jesus was angry.  Anger, in itself, is not sin. Ephesians 4:26 says, “Be angry, and do not sin.”

However, there is a point where anger can turn into sin, and hurt our testimony.

Maybe someone has hurt you.  Are your thoughts consumed by what this person has done to you?  Are you constantly thinking about ways to get back at them?  Do you hate this person because of what they did to you?

When we’ve been wronged, we want to be loud.  We want to argue.  We want revenge.  We want restitution.  We want consequences for those who’ve hurt us.  But God is more concerned with how we react when we are hurt.

1 Peter 3:9 tells us, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” And Proverbs 20:22 says, “Do not say, “I will avenge this evil!” Wait on the LORD, and He will deliver you.”

We are required to be humble.  Micah 6:8 tells us that the Lord requires us to walk humbly with our God.  The subject of humility is found throughout the Bible: “be completely humble and gentle” (Ephesians 4:2), “he crowns the humble with victory” (Psalm 149:4),  “he shows favor to the humble” (Proverbs 3:34), “with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11: 2), “clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” (1 Peter 5:5)

Being humble when you’ve been wronged isn’t easy.  But it is necessary.  When your heart and mind are consumed with anger, your heart and mind can’t be consumed with God.  If you constantly have feelings of hate for someone, you are pushing God away.  You are separating yourself from God’s love, when your mind is consumed with anger and hate.  God is love.  If you are full of hate, you can’t be full of God.  Seek God, and pray for Him to help you overcome your anger.
