When we think of pleasing God, we might think of helping out at church; donating to a worthy cause; or any other number of things that require us to give or do.
But pleasing God, and loving God, is found in being patient.
Patience doesn’t require great physical strength. Patience doesn’t require a high level of intelligence. Patience doesn’t require a lot of money.
Patience requires obedience.
God gives us verse after verse in the Bible about the importance of patience.
Proverbs 15:18 says, “One who is patient calms a quarrel.”
Proverbs 16:32 says, “Better a patient person than a warrior.”
He also commands us to be patient.
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.” Psalm 37:7
“Be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2
He gives us consequences for not being patient.
“Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools.” Ecclesiastes 7:9
“Fulls give full vent to their rage, but the wise bring calm in the end.” Proverbs 29:11
Patience is also found in Galatians 5:22 as one of the fruits of the spirit.
Lastly, God tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:4 that “Love is patient.”
We are commanded to love God and love others. Being patient demonstrates our love to both.
Maybe you’ve obeyed God, but things haven’t worked out the way you planned.
Be patient.
Maybe you’ve been praying for a family situation to resolve, yet it continues.
Be patient.
Maybe you’ve been praying for your grief to end, but the hurt keeps hurting.
Be patient.
Maybe you are worn out and stressed out, and feel like this season will never end.
Be patient.
Patience is hard. It’s easy to want a quick fix or instant gratification. We get caught up in trying to do it on our own.
But God says, “Be patient.” Show Him your love through patience. Demonstrate your faith that He is in control and is able, through patience.
Friends, He loves us. He is patient with us.
When we pick up our phone, but not His Word, He is patient.
When we see someone who has a need, but we don’t act, He is patient.
When we try, once again, to do something without asking Him what is best, He is patient.
When we know we should speak up for Him, but remain silent, He is patient.
God is faithful, and God is patient.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9
