As I read Exodus Chapter 4 today, these verses made me stop and think:
“And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the Lord met him and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision.”
One minute I’m reading about God giving Moses instructions to go to Pharaoh and perform these signs and wonders, and the next minute the Lord was seeking to kill Moses!
These verses seem so out of place.
But what do we know about Moses?
We know according to Numbers 12:3 that Moses was more humble than any man on the face of the earth.
We know he didn’t feel qualified to speak to the people.
We know God’s anger burned against him.
We know he didn’t circumcise his son.
We know God didn’t kill Moses.
So what can this seemingly out of place text, teach us?
If God wants you to do something, have faith that He will help you do it.
It’s great to be humble.
But don’t use humility as a way to disqualify you from what God has called you to do.
Be obedient to what God asks you to do.
Follow him.
Moses knew his sons needed to be circumcised but for some reason, he had not been obedient to following God in this matter.
Despite Moses’ unfaithfulness, God provided a way for him to be saved through Zipporah circumcising their son.
Likewise, despite what we deserve, God provides a way for all of us to be saved through the sacrifice of his son, Jesus.
God’s love is greater than our unfaithfulness.
Jesus’ blood saves us from an eternity without him. All we have to do is follow Him.
