I play the piano at our church. One Sunday, due to some issues with one of our projector screens, our music director had to stand in the back of the church to direct the music.
This worked out great for the congregation because they could see him directing, but since the piano is in the front, I could not.
I realized in that moment, just how much I relied on that hand to direct me.
Normally, his hand is always in view. He directs me when to start and stop. And he also helps me when I need to slow down or speed up.
I started thinking about God, and how He directs our lives.
We look for His hand. We want Him to guide us.
But sometimes, we take our eyes off of Him.
When I was playing the piano, without the hand of my music director, I was able to muddle through the songs. But it wasn’t nearly as good as it would’ve been if he had led me.
Isn’t it the same way with God?
When we take our eyes off of Him, we start trying to do things on our own. We might get so caught up in trying to make our own plans that we are nowhere near where God had planned for us.
My music director’s hand is constant and steady. If I’m worried that I’m getting off beat, I can look up and find his hand.
In the same way, when we realize we are getting off track in our lives, we can look up to God. He is our help. He directs our paths. Proverbs 3:6
Sometimes I get lost in the music, but again, I’m able to look up, see his hand, and he is there to help me find my place.
When we seem to lose our way, the best way to find the right path is to seek God. In Proverbs 32:8 God tells us that He will guide us along the best pathway for our lives; that He will advise us and watch over us.
Sometimes I play too fast, and with his gentle hand, he directs me to slow down.
Sometimes we are in a hurry too. Sometimes we try to make things happen faster than what God has planned. Again, look up. Look for His direction.
Other times, I play too slowly and with his hand, he helps me to quicken my pace.
God often sees us drag our feet when we know we should be doing something He has asked us to do. Sometimes, He allows things to happen in our lives to make us move.
I have a great music director. (I would say the best, but he wouldn’t like me to say that, so I won’t.)
But sometimes, he isn’t able to be there to direct me because of sickness, other responsibilities, etc.
But God is ALWAYS there to direct us.
Look up. His hand is always there to guide us.
Look up. His hand is always there, steady and constant.
Look up. His hand is always there, waiting for you to seek Him.
And when we look to Him for direction, we will make far more beautiful music than we ever could on our own.
I lift up my eyes to the hills— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalms 121:1-2
